Maintaining quality certainly involves costs, but the lack of quality or more specifically, implementing procedures to eliminate complications and non-conformities, has a much higher cost.

Furthermore, non-conformities harm manufacturers because they cause a loss of customers, in the long run.

Therefore, we can say that compliance costs depend on how much has been spent to “do things well”, while those associated with non-conformities are the costs related to how much more has been spent for “not having done things well”.

So how much does quality really cost?

To clearly evaluate quality costs and to have a clear idea of one’s situation, it is essential to define and apply a quality measurement system.

The cost of quality can be placed into four categories:

  • Appraisal Costs
  • Internal Failure Costs
  • External Failure Costs

1. Prevention Costs:

Prevention costs are the costs of all activities that are designed to prevent poor quality/non-conformities from arising in products or services.

Here are only some examples of prevention costs:

It often happens that the same company needs to request an RDT for some instruments and an ACCREDIA certificate for others.

In fact, we at S.A.M.A. Italia personally carry out and issue the RDT laboratory test reports while carefully appointing the best accredited laboratories for the ACCREDIA certificates.

Each laboratory is accredited for specific instruments so as a result, we are constantly evaluating the various accredited laboratories in order to always be sure who to send a particular instrument to.

Furthermore, based on the experience we have gained over the years, we believe that some laboratories are more thorough than others and are able to professionally and promptly respond to any post-calibration clarifications. This is why our customers’ instruments will only be sent to accredited laboratories that have passed our strict evaluations.

Nowadays, Ecol Studio Spa is a well-known company that works in various areas including health and safety in the workplace, but this company also does much more. Let’s read on to find out.

All our customers have different stories. Some are described on their websites; others are found in books. This is the case of Ecol Studio Spa and through its founding member, we are able to read the pages related to its history, chalk-full of events and difficulties which were faced and eventually overcome.

The origins

Back in 1982, Guido Fornari and his two friends, founded Ecol Studio, located in Garfagnana, Lucca, in the splendid region of Tuscany.

It was a very small company that worked in environmental analysis.

Initially, the income generated was not enough to meet the needs of three families, and eventually the three friends parted ways.

Guido pressed on, also working in another company to make ends meet, but without ever losing sight of his biggest goal: to make a billion lire in 10 years!

The dream began to take shape five years later, when Ecol Studio expanded, making use of trained staff such as Mario Santi, an employee who became a very important technical figure for the company.

From that moment on, the company has grown exponentially, both in the number of collaborators, offices opened in the area and of course, in turnover, which exceeded the initial target even before the hoped for 10 year mark.

The generational transition of Ecol Studio

In 2021 Guido Fornari published the book entitled: “Da un sogno a multinazionale” where he tells how he managed the generational transition of the company, by introducing his two sons in the company. One of his two sons, Claudio Fornari, “ate, breathed and slept” the company as a child and also had important experiences outside the family business; he was then able to reinterpret his path in an original way, gradually assisting his father at the helm of the company.

Over the years, the other son expressed a desire to create a different business and left the company.

It is a good story to read about and reflect on. It also sends a very clear message: “Children can be a great opportunity for a family business, just as the company represents a great opportunity for them. However, there must be no obligation, no pressure, no destiny is already written.”

In 2021, Ecol Studio S.p.A. also joined the Lifeanalytics group, contributing to the development of the largest network of laboratories in Italy at the service of companies.

The main goal of the quality control in mass production (both industrial and craft) is to verify the right functions of an instrument according to the functional and performance conditions of the datasheet.

The producer carries out some tests, measurements, assessments and inspections finalise to declare the product’s conformity accordingly the datasheet.

This test is a quality control activity freely provided from the manufacturer to the customer.

Calibration report

 

ACCREDIA calibration certificate

It is a document issued only by a calibration laboratory licensed by ACCREDIA.

This document is officially recognize both in Italy and in all the European countries adhering to EA (European Cooperation for Accreditation).

An ACCREDIA calibration certificate testifies that an instrument has been calibrated accordingly to procedures mutually acknowledged by the primary institutes of competence.

ACCREDIA certificates relieve their holder by any obligation to demonstrate that the calibrations have been performed as provided by the reference standards.

This kind of certificates according to the quality System standard for metrological laboratory (see UNI CEI ED ISO/IEC 17025) and to procedure approved by ACCREDIA.

Instruments and samples certified ACCREDIA are usually employed as “primary reference standards” (e.g. gauge blocks) in order to calibrate and control other equipment.
