The MEK Test, acronym for Methyl Ethyl Ketone Test, is a test used to verify the corrosion resistance of metal coatings.

In particular, it consists of applying a solution of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), an aggressive solvent, to the coating. This allows one to evaluate the resistance of the coating to corrosion and its adherence to the metallic substrate.

The SAAB521 by SAMA Tools, is a solvent abrasion testing machine used to test the abrasion resistance of coatings. It’s ideal for the production of paints, enamels, composite materials and floor coverings.

How does the MEK test work? (VIDEO)

Firstly,  it is useful to remember the standard references

The SAAB521 performs solvent abrasion tests according to ASTM D4752, ASTM D2486, ISO 4628-2 and ISO 11998 standards.

As we have already mentioned, the solvent abrasion test uses methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as a solvent.  The test consists of rubbing a piece of solvent-soaked gauze on the surface of the sample until the film breaks or defects. The machine is equipped with a digital control system that allows you to easily set the test conditions.

Watch the video to see  how truely simple and intuitive it is to use the SAMA Tools MEK test machine.

Who’s the MEK test for?

The SAAB521 is mainly used by manufacturers of paints, varnishes, composite materials and floor coverings. These manufacturers want products that stand up to wear and deterioration over time and the solvent abrasion test is one of the methods used to evaluate the abrasion resistance of coatings.

What’s so special about the SAMA Tools MEK test device ?

The machine stops automatically when the set friction limit is reached.

Thanks to it being highly precise, easy-to-use and adaptable, this device is able to meet the needs of the paint and coatings industry.

FAQ: In-Depth Information on Coating Abrasion Measurement

Which methods are commonly used to gauge the abrasion of a coating?

Common methods include various solvent abrasion tests, such as the MEK Test offered by SAMA Tools, which assesses the coating’s resistance to wear.

What is the recommended protocol for executing an abrasion test on a coating?

The process involves meticulous preparation of the sample and the controlled application of abrasive forces, following the specified guidelines in reference standards.

How is the abrasion resistance of a coating evaluated?

The evaluation when using SAMA Tools instruments, is based on observing changes in the coating’s appearance, such as loss of gloss, color changes, or the presence of scratches or erosions.

What are the factors that can influence the results of abrasion measurement?

Variables such as coating composition, application methods, and environmental conditions during testing may influence the results.

What are potential reasons for excessive abrasion on a coating?

Common contributors include the inappropriate selection of coating types, errors in the application process, or exposure to extreme operational conditions.

How can the abrasion resistance of a coating be enhanced during the production process?

Improvements can be achieved by optimizing the coating composition and refining application techniques.
