Solvent rub resistance tester (MEK test) – SAAB521

The Solvent Rub Tester typically uses methylethylketone (MEK) as the solvent.

This method is applied to paint topcoats and primers. The test involves scratching the surface with a gauze soaked in MEK until the film fails. The type of gauze, stroke distance, stroke rate, and approximate applied pressure are specified according to the standard.

Scratches are counted as double rubs, meaning one forward and one backward rub. This test is widely used in the paint industry because it provides a quick relative estimation of wear without having to wait for long-term exposure results.
